Android 15 is poised to revolutionize device tracking with the introduction of a groundbreaking feature that allows Pixel 9 devices to be tracked even when switched off. Similar to iOS’s Find My feature, this innovation leverages a Powered Off Finder API, enabling compatible devices to transmit Bluetooth beacons even in a powered-down state. While this requires some reserve power, it opens up possibilities for locating devices that are powered off or out of battery.

Powered Off Finding stores Bluetooth beacons in the device’s memory, allowing it to broadcast signals for location tracking even when switched off. This feature necessitates specific hardware support and engineering work from device manufacturers. Google Play Services will support this functionality by sending precomputed keys to the device’s Bluetooth chip for broadcasting.

Initially expected to debut with the Pixel 9, the Powered Off Finding feature will also be available on select older Pixel models like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro once they are updated to Android 15. Users will need to enable Bluetooth and location services in the Find My Device network settings to utilize this feature fully.

This advancement hints at enhanced device tracking capabilities, sparking anticipation among users for Android 15 and its potential to ensure the security and retrieval of Pixel devices, even in challenging circumstances.
